FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why does La Jolla High need a Foundation?
La Jolla High School receives district funds that pay for basic education but do not cover various academic, athletic or infrastructure enhancements that give our students the world-class education they need to compete in the current environment. That competitive advantage comes from our supporters in the form of donations that the Foundation manages. Unlike most other schools in our district, LJHS does not receive additional federal – or Title One – funds that could fund our students’ needs. So the Foundation was created to raise funds to provide the La Jolla High School administration with additional funding to bridge this shortfall and support programs and capital items not paid for by the school district.
How does the Foundation allocate funds?
The Foundation Board is a group of LJHS parent and alumni volunteers who raise funds and promote the mission of La Jolla High School. The prioritization of the school’s needs and disbursement of funds is directed by the Administration.
Does the Foundation’s General Fund Pay for Specific Athletic Teams?
No. Every Athletic team relies on donations and fundraising to support their team. Each team is self-sufficient.
The school district provides each high school with some athletic funding based on the size of the school. There are stipulations that these funds benefit both boys and girls sports equally. Because La Jolla High offers 27 different sports, this funding is diluted and therefore minimal compared to a school that offers 5 sports, for example. Foundation members provide fundraising ideas and assistance to teams, but the Foundation’s General Fund dollars are not spent on specific teams.
Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes! The Foundation of LJHS is a 501c3 non-profit organization, separate from La Jolla High School and the San Diego Unified School District, that supports fundraising at our school. Our Tax ID Number is #95-3837026
What is Celebrating the Centennial?
Celebrating the Centennial is our 2022-2023 annual giving campaign. With your help, we hope to raise $200,000 to help fund the Greatest Needs of La Jolla High School.
Do you accept corporate matching gifts, donations from non-LJHS parents and stock?
Yes to all of the above! Thanks to stock donations, corporate matching gifts and donations from community members and family, our school has raised necessary funds for our children. If your company provides matching funds, please contact Dana Irwin, Executive Director, Foundation of LJHS.
